Oh PLEASE let the weather man be right for a change!! We are way overdue for a winter with heavy snowfall. Bring on the blizzard. I am ready!!
I would love for there to be copious amounts of snow falling through the spring… but the reality of long term forecasting is that it is just not that accurate. If you watch any news at all this summer NOAA meteorologist are forecasting a weak to moderate El Nino for this winter season. You may ask yourself what El Nino does for me… well if you love to ski El Nino is ugly for you, and unless you like mild and dry conditions for your winter then El Nino is not for you. I would love to see this split flow forecast come to fruition. However, we will need a weak El Nino coupled with a negative NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) for split flow to truly develop across the continental United States keeping in mind that I have not mentioned the Arctic Oscillation and what impact it plays on our winter weather here in western PA. Too numerous variability’s come into play by the time winter weather rolls around, and we can only hope that the cyclonic flow aloft continues to dominate through the fall, and continues to push cold air across the region. I’m not trying to rain on the forecast just enhance the outlook.
